ANTI-ANAEMIC ACTIVITY OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF CYNARA SCOLYMUS LEAVES IN PHENYLHYDRAZINE INDUCED ANEMIC RAT
The main aim of this study is to determine the anti-anaemic activity in the methanolic leaf extract of cynara scolymus in phenylhydrazine induced anaemic rats. Phenylhydrazine (60mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally in rats for 2 days to induce anaemia. The animals were divided into 5 groups containing 4 animal each. 1st group was served as normal control group, 2nd group was served as anaemic control administered with phenylhydrazine for two days. 3rd group was served as standard reference control administered with vitaminB12 complex, 4th group was served as test control administered with 100mg/kg of methanolic leaf extract of cynara scolymusand 5th group was served as test control administered with 200mg/kg of methanolic leaf extract of cynara scolymus. All the test drugs were given for 14days daily through oral route. On the 14th day blood was withdrawn, through tail puncture and subjected to determine the RBC,HB and percentage haematocrit. Both the methanolic extract of cynara scolymus and vitaminB12 significantly increase the HB, RBC & % HCT indicates the cynara scolymus leaf exhibits the anti-anaemic activity.
