Erythrina species (e.g. Erythrina abyssinica Lam. ExDC.)are one of the widest distributed plants with many medicinal and non-medicinal applications world-over. They have medicinal applications in both humans and animals which include managing infections (bacterial, fungal or viral); metabolic and central nervous diseases/disorders as well as aiding in hunting and surgical procedures. Extracts of some Erythrina species have been used as antidotes in strychnine poisoning cases as well. Wider margins of safety have also been reported for E. abyssinica but some plants, e.g. E.velutina, have been linked to genotoxicity thus caution during regular use and further safety evaluations are encouraged. Given their relatively easier propagation, Erythrina species promises a sustainable herbal medicinaloption for current and future generations if properly exploited.
